4th Summer Energy Camp for Middle School Students
FLATE, FESC and Hillsborough Community College South Shore campus, will be hosting their third Summer Energy Camp this July. The camp will take place July 7-10 at HCC-South Shore Campus in Ruskin. During the camp, 25 students from Beth Shields Middle School in Ruskin, currently enrolled in Hillsborough County’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, will learn about the many aspects of renewable energy technologies. Through a variety of activities, students will be introduced to energy concepts including fossil fuels, their environmental impact, and the science of electricity generation. Hands-on activities will continue through days two, three and four as students learn about solar cells, wind energy, environmental care, fuel-cells, home energy efficiency and ocean energy. Florida Colleges Energy Education Forum
The 3rd Annual Florida Colleges Energy Education Forum was hosted by Palm Beach State College’s Institute for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (IEES) on January 31. Forty participants from the energy education and industry realms were treated to exciting presentations covering a range of energy-related topics. This is the third workshop offered by FLATE-FESC to bring educators and industry people from all over Florida together to learn and share ideas and knowledge about energy education and energy industry workforce needs. Community College Energy Workshop
In January 2013, FLATE and FESC offered an energy-based workshop for community college educators and incumbent industry professionals. The workshop was held at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) in Cocoa, FL, and offered a platform for educators and industry from across Florida to work together, share current and future workforce needs, and generate ideas on developing curriculum to meet industry needs. Attendees also toured FSEC’s state-of-the-art facility, lauded as “the world’s most energy efficient building” replete with solar panels, solar water heaters and a solar panel testing laboratory.
